TRACY — Spreckels Park Little League’s Intermediate 50/70 all-stars will have one more chance to lock down the District 67 Tournament championship.
Patterson forced the “if necessary” final an 11-1 drubbing in six innings on a blustery Thursday evening at Legacy Fields. Patterson advanced to the title round with an 18-8 win over Manteca on Wednesday. The winner-take-all contest is tonight back at Legacy Fields.
Pitcher Gio Montesino went the distance for Patterson, firing 12 strikeouts while giving up just five hits and a walk. He was supported by prolific attack that bashed two home runs in the second inning for an early 8-1 lead.
Spreckels Park plated its lone run in the bottom of the first inning. Jonah Grubb laced a one-out single and was knocked in on Bradyn Morales’ hit. Spreckels Park missed an opportunity to answer Patterson’s early barrage in the second inning after Deon Elder belted a one-out double and wound up on third on a passed ball. Montesino got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
Spreckels Park left five runners stranded, four in scoring position.
Grubb was Spreckels Park’s starting pitcher and ran into some bad luck with two outs. After he retired the first two batters of the game, the infield committed two errors that led to four unearned runs. Then in the second, also with two outs, Arian Carillo and Braydon Marlow smacked their home runs with the wind blasting toward the outfield fences.
Marlow’s jack drove in two, and he finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Carlos Garcia was also 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Ruben Gregoris and Montesino each scored twice.
Patterson got production up and down its lineup, totaling 11 hits.
Tom Holbert hammered two doubles and walked once from the No. 10 spot. No. 9 hitter Josiah Presley doubled and scored on a balk in the sixth inning to activate the mercy rule. Xavier Serbo, batting 11th, contributed an RBI single.
