The Manteca Quilters will make the Wentworth Building at the County Office of Education come alive this weekend with their artistry and imagination displayed in their most recent quilts and cloth dolls.
The 40th annual Manteca Quilt and Cloth Doll Show takes place Saturday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 100 quilts, soft dolls and wearable arts will be on display.
The San Joaquin County Office of Education is on Arch Road just west of Highway 99 and north of the Stockton Metropolitan Airport. Admission is $7 with children under 12 free and a two-day adult pass is $10.
Each of the quilts and dolls tell stories and why they were made by the artist. Some bring back memories of childhood days and delight show-goers with their colors, shapes and designs.
The featured artist is Judy Mullen of Manteca. Since her childhood sewing has been central to her life. She has shared her knowledge teaching, sewing and quilting with her sewing skills having won many awards both nationally and internationally. She is a life member of the Manteca Quilters where she has served as president and Quilt Show Chair three times. She is the founder and chairperson of the Central Valley Wearable Artists and a past Northern California Quilt Council Board member. She teaches, lectures trunk shows and judges throughout California.
A viewers’ choice award will be voted on by those attending the event for best quilt, machine quilting, hand quilting, needlework, applique, wearable art and dolls.
The quilting guild’s talented members are planning free demonstrations and classes at the show. Featured will be a Members’ Boutique, resale items and Fabric and Craft Vendors followed by a “Stitch to Win” where participants are taught to hand quilt by putting a few hand stitches on a small quilt.
A raffle item – a beautiful Opportunity Quilt entitled “Café Clamshells — is being offered to those in attendance. It was designed by Sue Pellan, pieced and appliqued by Pat Ocheltree, Linda Cookman and Pat Kilpatrick and quilted by Jan Truscott. Donation for a chance at the quilt to the non-profit is $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The winner need not be present.
The net proceeds from the show will go to help support the Guild’s contributions to its many causes including quilts, pillowcases and backpacks for kids, hats and bonnets for cancer victims, caps for preemies, hospice gowns for patients in the San Joaquin County Hospice Group and to Friends of the Library as well. The Guild also creates “Quilts of Honor” for military veterans. Samples of the Guild’s philanthropy efforts will be on display at the Quilt Show this weekend.
