A 42-year-old Manteca man died Saturday night after he crashed his motorcycle into a chain link fence at an estimated 70 to 80 miles per hour after running off the southbound lanes of Highway 99.
Richard Wayne Summers had been riding his 1998 Yamaha XV1100 motorcycle near Lathrop Road when the crash occurred. A witness said the motrocyclist failed to negotiate a left turn in the roadway.  The witness said the motorcycle veered toward the right shoulder, traveled off the main portion of the freeway and down a dirt embankment where it collided with the metal fence.
The witness also told officers there were no other vehicles in close proximity to the motorcycle, no obvious hazards in the roadway and no signs of braking or slowing by the motorcycle prior to it leaving the freeway.
The crash is under further investigation by the CHP.
