Sleeping driver in intersection

A motorist found asleep behind the wheel in the Airport Way intersection to the eastbound 120 Bypass onramp Monday at 4:20 a.m. reacted to officers’ demands to speak to him by driving away down Airport Way triggering a police pursuit.
Manteca Police said they found Daniel Vieyra’s van idling with him sitting behind the wheel with a passenger in the front seat.  The chase traveled southbound before the driver yielded to red lights and siren in the 21500 block of South Airport Way in the county.
The front seat passenger complied with officers’ commands to exit the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.  Police said the 33-year-old driver was uncooperative and failed to obey repeated commands to exit the vehicle.  When the driver finally did exit, he was hostile and refused to comply with efforts to take him into custody, police said.
As a result, a brief struggle ensued before he was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car.
