Official 'embarrassed' by expense errors
SANTA CLARA (AP) — The head of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors says he takes full responsibility for errors in using his government credit card that forced him to repay thousands of dollars to taxpayers.
Board President George Shirakawa posted an email this week on his county Web page. In it, Shirakawa says he's embarrassed by the mistakes.
The newspaper says Shirakawa has repaid some $5,000 of the charges he made on his county-issued credit card since taking office in 2009.
The district attorney's office has questioned use of the card for car rentals, hotel stays and golf games.
6 arrested at funeral for reputed gang member
FREMONT (AP) — Police in Fremont have arrested six people attending the funeral of a reputed gang member.
The Bay Area News Group says five men and a woman were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of gun, drug and parole violations. Two handguns were seized.
Police say they were detained in a chapel parking lot during the service for a reputed gang member who recently was killed in San Francisco.
Man killed in home invasion robbery
MONTE SERENO (AP) — Police say a man was killed and his wife injured during a home invasion robbery in an upscale San Francisco Bay area neighborhood.
The wife called 911 around 1:40 a.m. Friday to report that the home in the Santa Clara County town of Monte Sereno had been ransacked and the couple attacked.
Police found the husband dead inside although they have not said how he was killed.
Sacramento woman sentenced in sex trafficking
OAKLAND (AP) — A Sacramento woman convicted of trafficking teenage prostitutes in the San Francisco Bay area has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
Federal prosecutors say a judge issued the sentence against 22-year-old Helen Jean Singh on Wednesday. Singh pleaded guilty to sex trafficking conspiracy earlier this year.
She and her husband, Mike Singh, were accused of luring four teenage girls into prostitution by promising them money, drugs and a family environment. But prosecutors say the Singhs used force and threats to keep the girls working.
Mike Singh pleaded guilty to sex trafficking in January and also received a nine-year sentence.
Detroit mayor to make good on World Series bet
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says he plans to make good on his World Series wager by visiting San Francisco next week.
Bing and San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee vowed the leader of the losing team's city would tour economic ventures and perform some community service involving young people. The Giants swept the Tigers in four games.
In a news release issued Friday by his office, Bing said he will join Lee Monday on a tour of two San Francisco companies, then tour AT&T Park with 25 young people involved in the Junior Giants baseball program. Both mayors and Giants VIPs will talk to Junior Giants participants at the ballpark.
Lee had said he would visit with young people in Detroit and tour a Chevy Volt factory if the Giants lost.
