MOUNTAIN VIEW (AP) — Authorities investigating a noxious odor that prompted evacuations in a San Francisco Bay Area city discovered two bodies inside a residence.

The San Jose Mercury News reports four police officers were treated at the scene in Mountain View late Wednesday for issues related to the strong smell.

The source of the odor has not yet been determined.

Police did not release any information about a possible cause of death for the pair found inside the residence.

Police spokeswoman Shino Tanaka says officials originally were called to the area for a report of a noxious gas-like odor just after 6 p.m.

When crews arrived, the smell was so bad that they evacuated two apartment buildings, and issued a shelter-in-place order for another building.

PG&E crews shut off gas lines to the area as crews worked to find the cause.
