LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County leaders are seeking a court injunction against newly elected Sheriff Alex Villanueva to reverse his reinstatement of a deputy who volunteered on Villanueva’s campaign after being fired due to alleged domestic abuse.

The Los Angeles Times reports county lawyers say the rehiring of Deputy Caren Carl Mandoyan was unlawful.

Mandoyan was fired in 2016 by former Sheriff Jim McDonnell, a veteran law enforcement leader whose re-election bid was upset by Villanueva.

, who at the time was a retired lieutenant.

Mandoyan’s attorney, Greg Smith, said Monday that his client plans to remain on the job.

Sheila Kuehl, a member of the county Board of Supervisors, says there is a solid belief that the termination was final and the new sheriff did not have authority to reinstate the deputy.
