Katie Kim is a win away from achieving something no other Manteca High girls singles tennis player has done in 34 years.

She has reached the semifinal round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament after sweeping two opponents Thursday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville. Play resumes this morning at 10.

No matter the outcome, the MHS junior will garner a second top-four medal from the Section event. Two years ago, she was partnered with Sahiba Kaur and placed second in the doubles tourney — the best finish by a girls doubles tandem in school history.

Manteca alumnae Ranata School and Lynn Henderson captured singles titles in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Katie Gaynor is the last Buffalo to make a final, doing so in 1987 and finishing as the runner-up.

Seeded third, Kim squares off with Rio Americano’s Libby Griggs today. Griggs started her day by eliminating Kim’s teammate Emma Ngo, 6-0, 6-0. Ngo qualified as the third-place finisher out of the Valley Oak League.

As for Kim, the VOL champ, knocked off Mountain House’s Subha Patel 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round. She then vanquished Maya Khanna of Vanden, 6-2, 6-2.

On the other end of the bracket are top-seeded Clarissa Sutami of Vista del Lago and No. 4 Nia Macay of Vacaville.
