1989: Buffs pull off wild OT win against Mission

20 years ago: December 16, 1989: East Union High, playing against Beyer High, a team with players 6-5 and 7-0, took the Patriots into overtime before losing 58-56 last night. Armando Avina tried to keep the Lancers in the game with 23 points, including all four EU counters in overtime.

The Manteca High girls took a sluggish 36-32 win over Stagg High for third place overall in the Delta Queens Classic in Stockton yesterday. Cateena Gleaves led the Lady Buff scorers with 10 points.

Angelo Gama, East Union High’s senior 128-pound wrestler, pinned all five of his opponents, including a 58-second pin in the final match at the James Riddle Classic in Oakdale.

Coach Mike Henry’s undersized Manteca High basketball team stayed with San Francisco’s Mission High stride for stride and pulled out a wild 78-76 overtime win in the third place game of the Tracy Sunrise Rotary Holiday Tournament Thursday night. Davey Foehringer finished with a whopping 16 assists, notched five rebounds and had six steals to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. He also had 11 points. Jason Van De Pol continued his excellent tourney play with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Rick Mullen finished with a game-high 21 points and Jeff Nussbaumer added 11 more.

: December 24, 1999 - Pulling away in the second half, the Merrill West High boys basketball team routed a weary Manteca High squad 73-51 in the championship game of the 14th annual Tracy Winter Holiday Classic at the West High gym. All-tourney selection Adam Jacobs paced the Buffaloes with 15 points but scored just three in the second half. He also pulled down 12 rebounds. Josh Ary also was selected to the all-tourney team.

Scoring five goals in the span of 25 minutes in the first half, the Sierra High soccer team earned their seventh consecutive shutout by pasting Bear Creek High 7-0 Wednesday afternoon in Stockton. Ginny Teunissen recorded a hat trick for the Lady Timberwolves, scoring the final three goals of the first half. Ana Almeida booted a pair of scores in the second half for Sierra.

The Sierra High girls basketball team ran into brick wall on the road Tuesday in Sacramento by dropping a 54-24 decision to Natomas High. Trish Werre canned 12 points in a losing cause.

Getting everyone involved, the East Union High girls basketball team took control in the second quarter against Linden High and coasted to a 49-17 wipeout in the Lodi Tournament on Monday. Sophomore Amy Haapanen nearly matched the Lions’ output with 14 points as 12 different Lady Lancers scored. Coach Rick Inderbitzen’s team is now 6-4 on the season.

During the championship game of the Delta Queens Tournament Saturday night, Tiffany Guzman came alive to lift Manteca High past Sierra High 46-40 at the Stagg High gym. Guzman, a former Lady T’wolf, scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to lead the Lady Buffs. She was also named the tourney’s MVP. It was the first preseason tournament title for MHS in nearly eight years. Trish Werre collected 12 points and 11 rebounds for Sierra.

East Union High enjoyed a 77-66 win over Alhambra High in cage action for seventh place at the Armijo Tournament in Fairfield on Saturday. Wes Carter tanked 28 points and Andrew Emery added 27 for Coach Eric Simoni’s Lancers.

In the consolation game of the Linden Tournament, Sierra High took a 68-37 win over Ripon High last Saturday. Alberto Carrera netted 17 points and landed on the all-tourney team. Jason Brown added 14 points to the winning total.
