With it are the traditional celebration of corned beef and cabbage along with the alcohol beverage of choice.
It’s the later that will have police on the lookout.
The Manteca Police Department posted Friday that officers “will be on alert for suspected impaired drivers” in an effort to remind the community to celebrate responsibly by designating a sober driver.
The program, “Celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day Responsibly: Designate a Sober Driver, Your Lucky Charm,” is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Added Traffic Officer Jose Plascencia: “Designating a sober driver before the festivities begin can save lives. It’s a simple way to make sure everyone traveling on our roads gets home safely.”
St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest times on the roadway, according to the NHTSA.
It’s on this day that more than 13,384 preventable deaths throughout 2021 involved drunk driving, representing 31 percent of all traffic fatalities in U.S. that year – 47 people were killed in drunk driving crashes that year.
Manteca police will be looking out for more than drunk drivers.
“Marijuana, prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may also impair,” police said. “Do your research and understand how certain drugs may affect your driving ability.”
