MODESTO — East Union High’s girls soccer team had a strong showing its first non-league match of the season Monday, battling Central Catholic to a 0-0 tie.

Central Catholic (1-0-1) was the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division V playoff runner-up to Ripon in 2009.

The defenses on both sides set the tone early and carried it through the rest of the match, as each team was held to just four shots on goal.

Jesika Villegas, Reanna Schmitt and Kianna Lamont did well to stand their ground on East Union’s back line. Coach Jim Todd also lauded the efforts of Erica daSilva, Selena daSilva and Kayla Lamont for their efforts elsewhere on the pitch.

“I was really pleased with the first match for our program,” Todd said. “There were times during play, especially early on, where control was established against a very strong Central Catholic program.

“We were pleased to see certain things we’ve already worked on executed well, but we noted certain things to work on.”

The Lancers will look to pick up their first victory Wednesday when they play host to Golden Valley of Merced at Northgate Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
