TENNIS: Sierra shuts out Beyer in postseason opener

Sierra is a win away from reaching the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV final for the third time in four seasons after blanking visiting Beyer 9-0 Tuesday in its playoff opener.

The second-seeded Timberwolves (12-3), defending their D-III title from 2019, host No. 3 Placer today starting at 3. Placer pasted No. 6 Pioneer, 8-1.

They swept all of their matches Tuesday, but the Valley Oak League runners-up had to work for the shutout. Victoria Zellner warded off Victoria Zellner 6-3, 7-9, 7-6 in the No. 2 singles match.

In other singles matches: No. 1 Caitlin Morrow took down Rayanna Arellano 6-3, 6-4; No. 3 Tanya Sharma defeated Maya Martin 6-3, 7-5; No. 4 Brisa Gonzalez dispatched Camille Cortez (6-3, 6-4), No. 5 Sidney Pham beat Angela Ware 7-5, 6-3 and No. 6 Maryn Peterson edged Olivia Kaanen, 6-2, 7-5.

In doubles, Sierra’s top tandem of Amber Garza and Simran Dosanjh toppled Cardine Roseman and Sarah Alwakeel, 6-4, 6-2. Jaden Alton and Grace Langenfield won the No. 2 match 6-3, 6-2 against Callie Garcia-Cropper and Leah Kinsey. The third doubles match belonged to Navleen Dosanjh and Alessia Manetti, who dominated Charlotte Freeman and Alessandra Rossini, 6-0, 6-0.
